Ridgeview Charter’s jazz band opens season at local festival
The Ridgeview Jazz I Band, the top jazz ensemble at Ridgeview Charter School, opened their performing season on the entertainment stage at Heritage Green during the 2011 Sandy Springs Festival.
Under the direction of Mike Gibson, the band played many audience favorites such as “On Broadway,” “Smoke on the Water,” and “Louie Louie.” RCS Jazz I performs around town for various civic and community events throughout the school year and has at least three more concert gigs on the books this fall.
Currently there are more than 600 students participating in music programs at Ridgeview Charter School, which is approximately 70% of the total student body. About 250 Ridgeview students participate in the band program alone. The national average for student participation in middle school music programs hovers around 30%, making Ridgeview an exceptional example for music education.
