Dr. Robert M. Avossa became Superintendent of the Fulton County School System in June 2011. He has a diversity of experience with key roles at the elementary, middle and high school levels as well as at the district level, including Area Superintendent, Chief of Staff and as Chief Strategy and Accountability Officer. He holds a bachelor’s degree in exceptional education and behavior disorders as well as a master’s degree in special education, both from the University of South Florida. Avossa also holds a specialist’s degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University, and a doctorate degree in education from Wingate University.
The Superintendent's Division is comprised of the Chief of Staff's Office, the Communications & Constituent Services Department, the Legislative Liaison and the Internal Auditor.
The Chief of Staff serves as the primary member of the Superintendent’s staff responsible for the central coordination of activities that ensures the quality flow of information to and from the Office of the Superintendent. The Chief of Staff supports the Superintendent in serving and working with the Board of Education. The Office of the Chief of Staff helps to facilitate effective communication between the Superintendent’s Office and key internal and external audiences. Among these groups are the Superintendent’s Community Council, Parent Advisory Council, Principal Advisory Council, Teachers Advisory Council, Student Advisory Council, Chambers of Commerce, and central office/school administrators. The Chief of Staff also serves as a liaison between the Superintendent and direct reports, including Facilities, Finance, Human Resources, and Legal Counsel.
The Communications and Constituent Services Department focuses on two-way communication with schools, departments, parents, citizens and the community at-large. The department consists of Communications, Constituent Services, and Broadcast & Video Technology (which includes the FCSTV cable channel).
The Legislative Liaison coordinates the Fulton County School System’s legislative priorities and serves as a liaison between legislators and the school district during the legislative session. The Legislative Liaison helps to develop and maintain effective relationships with federal, state, and local authorities by serving as a resource for critical information between Fulton County Schools and these entities.
The Department of Internal Audits is primarily responsible for directing all internal audit activities within the school district and providing specific support in other key accounting areas such as the annual financial audit. The internal Auditor has the overall responsibility of reporting the results of all internal audit reviews and other accounting work to senior school district management and the Board.
